On June 24, 1973, during the Christopher Street Liberation Day Rally in Washington Square Park, Sylvia Rivera spoke on behalf of homeless and incarcerated members of the LGBTQ community, despite attempts to prevent her from speaking. The majority of the white cisgender crowd booed and heckled her.
