Rome World Pride, 2000

Rome hosted the first World Pride event in 2000. The Roman Catholic Church unsuccessfully sought to block the event, making for a heated political battleground leading up to elections in 2001. This fight over Pride led to Italy's minister for agricultural policy coming out of the closet as bisexual, an unprecedented declaration from an Italian public official in 2000.
