Rollerena on the 1977 march and Anita Bryant
Rollerena describes her experience at the 1977 Christopher Street Liberation Day March and Anita Bryant’s anti-gay “Save the Children” campaign. Bryant became a spokesperson for attempts to repeal laws that protected LGBTQ people. In October 1977, a protestor famously hit Bryant in the face with a pie on national television. Rollerena was a fixture of Greenwich Village life, where she was regularly seen roller-skating through crowds as New York’s own “Fairy Godmother.” Video from the National Park Service's Stonewall Oral History Project, in partnership with the LGBT Community Center and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.
