Mattachine Society "Sip-In," 1966

In April, 1966, the Mattachine Society of New York, led by Dick Leitsch, held a “Sip-In” at Julius, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York. Protesting the State Liquor Authority, which at the time had a policy of refusing bar service to homosexuals on the grounds that they were “disorderly,” Leitsch and his companions entered Julius and demanded to be served, threatening to sue if they were turned away.
